FREDRICKSBURG, Texas — Jose V. Contreras, 89, passed away at his daughters home in Fredericksburg, Texas. He was born on Jan. 13, 1928 in Devine, Texas, the son of Esperion and Antonia (Velos) Contreras.  Jose married Guadalupe Reyes in 1959 in Texas. He served in the U.S. Army then retired from the Maintenance Department at Northern Illinois University.  
Grandpa, Papa Joe, Pops, Windy was a man among men. His contagious laugh, warm heart and soft-spokenness will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Guadalupe; three sons, Edward, Vince and Domingo; sister, Pancha Velaquez; and brother, Tomas Contreras.
He is survived by his five sons, Albert (Suzie) Contreras, Joe Contreras, Henry Contreras, Tommy Contreras, Mark  Contreras; five daughters, Martha Contreras, Alicia (Barney) O’Rorke, Teresa (Beto) Ortiz, Tonia (Keith) Holland, and Dora (Joseph) Jolliff; grandchildren, Eddie Contreras Jr., Veronica Contreras, Melissa Contreras, Jessica Contreras, Solana, Contreras, Dante Contreras, Ashley (Jerry) Kessen, Craig Contreras, Corderol Contreras, Iesha Contreras, Jordan Burgess, Savanna Fletcher, Amelia Contreras, Mathew Contreras, Sasha Pees, Dominica Contreras, Zebedia Contreras, Cassandra Contreras, Mark Contreras Jr., Vanessa Suter, Jordan (Marco) Ramos, Travis Myers, Troy Myers, Trevor (Diana) O’Rorke, Trask O’Rorke, Tracy O’Rorke, Spencer Contreras, Tatiana Contreras, Keith Holland Jr., Ricardo Ortiz, Daniel Ortiz Rafael (Kelly) Contreras and Obaldo Contreras; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Unger Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Ruben Herrera officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery with military services provided by the Eastern Lee Ogle Honor Guard.
