ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team faced stiff competition on Thursday, falling 5-0 against Sterling in nonconference action with all five losses coming in straight sets. Rochelle (3-8, 1-4 Interstate 8) will return to the court with a home match against Streator on Friday.
Sterling took both singles points, as senior Jimmy Chavez conceded an 0-6, 0-6 loss against Brecken Peterson at the No. 1 court while sophomore Philip Winters took three games in a 1-6, 2-6 loss against Servanto Diaz at the No. 2 court. Senior Parker Lenkaitis and sophomore Mark Green nearly secured one of the three doubles points available on Thursday, playing a tough first set during their 6-7(3), 4-6 loss to Iker Zaragoza and Benjamin Boza at the No. 1 court.
Senior Alex McBride and sophomore Caleb Mortensen were swept in an 0-6, 0-6 loss to Yamaan Alkhalaf and Jubraan Alkhalaf at the No. 2 court, while seniors Austin Raleigh and Eli Luxton nearly claimed the second set of their 3-6, 6-7(2) loss to Gavin Staats and Nathan Guerrero at the No. 3 court.
