ROCHELLE — Work began Friday morning to repair a sinkhole located in a parking lot between May School and Rochelle Middle School. Rochelle Streets Superintendent Tim Isley explained the storm sewer drainage pipe rusted and collapsed, creating the sinkhole.
Crews had to extract the steel piping, part of an aging infrastructure, and will replace it with about 60 feet of 24-inch plastic pipe. The repairs are expected to be complete sometime next week with a gravel patch until the section of the lot can be paved when weather permits.
Work will begin next week on another sinkhole located on Washington Street.
