ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Police Department was on-site at Dunkin' Donuts on Friday raising money with its annual ‘Cop on Rooftop’ promotion for Special Olympics Illinois.

Officers and members of RPD were in the drive thru and on the roof of the business, interacting with the community and accepting donations. RPD Chief Pete Pavia said Friday morning that his department was hoping for another record after 2023 set a high mark.

"Everything has gone well," Pavia said. "We have a lot of people coming by and stopping. We're very happy with it. I love the community support. People are so supportive of us every year. It just keeps getting bigger and better. Special Olympics Illinois is just an amazing program. I love what they stand for and I love this event."

RPD will also raise money for Special Olympics Illinois with its Torch Run on June 5 at 10 a.m. and with a golf outing in the fall.

May 12-18 was National Police Week. Pavia said the week saw the community reach out to support RPD and local residents, businesses and organizations dropped off things like cookies, treats and sandwiches.

Friday was all-hands on deck for RPD to ensure it raised as much money as possible.

"Everyone is on the same page with things like this," Pavia said. "We have a phenomenal department. We have dispatchers here today who worked last night. They got off shift and came here and stayed for the duration."
