Rochelle police rise to the challenge

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Police Department’s lip sync challenge has all the makings for a big hit.

Following Wednesday’s premiere many in the community enthusiastically posted comments, sharing the video all over social media. As of Thursday morning, the video has been viewed approximately 32,000 times on Facebook and nearly 4,600 times on YouTube.

“Every business we approached to participate was so excited,” said Jenny Thompson, City of Rochelle Marketing and Public Relations Manager. “Sunshine Bakery gave us bakery boxes, Dunkin Donuts provided the donuts, Off the Wall Café and their customers graciously allowed us to film there and Chicagoland Skydiving spent the afternoon with us creating the perfect shots and taking our officers, a dispatcher, the police chief, the city manager, and even a councilman for a skydive.”

The lip sync challenge could very well be the biggest trend on social media this summer with departments across the country producing their entertaining videos.

Rochelle has a unique advantage with the skydiving facility in the city limits, so of course it seemed appropriate to incorporate that into the video.

Thompson credits Cory Beck and Sandy Sullivan, both with the police department, for creating the storyline. The pair approached Jeff Fiegenschuh, Rochelle City Manager, and asked if he would be interested in starring as the “bad guy” in the video.

Danny Williams from Lifeworks Photography filmed the scenes.

“We started filming on a Sunday morning at the police department while downtown Rochelle was quiet. We had Jeff, a majority of our department, along with our families here for filming that day,” Thompson explained. “Later in the week we filmed on Lincoln Highway and at Off the Wall Cafe and on Friday afternoon the group went skydiving.”

Word spread quickly as the scenes were being filmed. All in all, production of the video involved plenty of teamwork.

“Not only is this an excellent public relations opportunity for our police department, this was the best team building activity I have ever participated in,” Fiegenschuh said.
