City seeking proposals from area artists for public spaces

ROCHELLE — The City of Rochelle is seeking proposals from area artists to provide art, in any form, to public spaces in the community. Proposals are due May 21 by 4 p.m.

Following the successful completion of a mural on the Hub City Furniture building located in downtown Rochelle, the city has contemplated the idea of adding more art throughout the community.

“The addition of Mat and Mandey’s mural in our downtown has brightened the space, drawn more visitors to our downtown, and created a sense of community pride,” City Manager Jeff Fiegenschuh said.

In 2022, the sibling duo of Mat and Mandey Steder completed a floral art piece that has served as the backdrop for numerous community events and even family photos.

City staff has discussed placing more art in a number of locations around town, but the request for proposals leaves that location open to the artist.

“We’re asking for creativity – if there is a location that you see as a perfect fit for your piece, please include that in the proposal!” Community Development Director, Michelle Pease said.

Art may be placed on City-owned property or on private property as part of this project. Maps of City-owned spaces and details on permissions for the use of privately owned property are included in the RFP packet.

Artists should include a budget in the proposal to be compensated for their work.
