OREGON — The January meeting of the 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County was held at the Rock River Center in Oregon.
Presentations were given by Kris Gilbert of the Ogle County Historical Society and Gail Tuttle of the Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County.
Both presentations were informative and both organizations are very deserving of the IMPACT AWARD.
However, after the votes were counted later during the meeting, the Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County was the winner. The Historical Society is still eligible for this award at future meetings.
Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. They serve those in need of decent affordable housing in Ogle County. They do not give away free homes. Each chosen family must be from Ogle County, provide proof of employment, and not have outstanding debt.
They apply for a mortgage much like a conventional mortgage. If chosen by the family selection committee and approved by the board, then they are required to provide 200 hours of sweat equity per adult living in the family. They will also need to take a class and pass a test on financial management of owning a home.
They currently have homeowners in Polo, Mt. Morris, Byron, Oregon and Rochelle. In 2022 they will build their 14th home in Rochelle. The money from 100 Women Who Care will be used to bring the utilities to the property.
There are currently 36 members of 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County, and, of course, its goal is to reach 100 members as soon as possible. Each member donates $100 to the winning charity so when it reaches 100 members, the winning charity will receive $10,000.
