Lois Ann Jaeger, age 97, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Wesley Willows in Rockford. 

For years, enrollment in Illinois’ public schools has been on the decline, but the number of English Learners (ELs) – students in PreK through 12th grade who require additional programming to develop academic English enabling their full participation in school – is on the rise. From 2010 to 2011 to SY2020-21, the EL population in Illinois has more than doubled, from 156,888 to 245,592 students. These students require qualified bilingual educators to succeed. Without such teachers, vital lessons in math, science, and reading fall by the wayside.

On Jan. 23 at 11:42 a.m. Marco A. Hernandez, 31, of Rochelle was arrested for no valid driver’s license and cited for no insurance. He signed a promise to comply and was given a Feb. 16 Rochelle court date.

On Jan. 23 at 11:58 a.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 8,000 block of North Kishwaukee Road.  As a result, Karina F. Canizal, 34, of Rockford was arrested for driving while license revoked. Canizal was additionally issued citations for operating a motor vehicle with registration/suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and possession of cannabis/improper container/driver. Canizal was transported to the Ogle County Jail and released on a notice to appear with a future court date.

Jane Helen Reineck, 70, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity bowling team concluded its Interstate 8 Conference schedule with a road match against Kaneland on Thursday.

In August 2021, Nolan Turner of Rochelle suffered a C5/C6 incomplete spinal cord injury in a car accident. Turner has spent the past year practicing and competing in wheelchair rugby.

Ogle County 4-H is excited to partner with Flagg-Rochelle Public Library and the Ogle County Master Gardeners to teach youth about growing vegetables. This new horticulture club, Rochelle Green Thumbs 4-H Club, is open to any youth in Ogle County, ages 8-18, by Sept. 1, 2023.

Following a jury trial on Jan. 18 at the Ogle County Courthouse, a Hillcrest man was found not guilty of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Eric Arnquist of law firm Tess, Crull & Arnquist, said.
