ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team continued its Interstate 8 Conference series against Sycamore on Wednesday, scoring the first two runs but committing seven total errors in a 19-2 loss to the Spartans. The Hubs (3-6, 0-2 Interstate 8) will look to avoid the conference series sweep when Sycamore returns to face Rochelle on Thursday evening.
Rochelle held a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning, where senior Brock Metzger hit a lead-off single and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder from junior Ethan Goodwin. Freshman Brody Bruns walked and scored on a passed ball three batters later to aid the Hub offense.
Sycamore took the lead after tallying four runs on a series of Rochelle errors in the top of the second inning. The Spartans scored six runs in the top of the third inning, where Kyle Prebil smacked a solo home run and Tyler Townsend followed with a three-run homer later in the frame. Matthew Rosado added an RBI single to help the Spartans take a 10-2 lead.
A three-run homer from Collin Severson sparked a four-run frame for Sycamore in the top of the fourth inning. The Spartans clinched their win with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, where Teague Hallahan slapped a two-run single and Townsend followed with an RBI single.
