ROCHELLE — Junior defender Betty Flores was named an Interstate 8 All-Conference First Team honoree for the second consecutive season. Flores returned for her third season with the Rochelle Lady Hub varsity soccer team this spring, scoring two goals and adding one assist while anchoring the defensive line. Flores was also named a team captain this season.

“I felt like I was able to show out and it feels great to be recognized,” Flores said. “I felt that my confidence improved drastically from last year and I have more ambition year after year. One area where I want to improve for next year would be encouraging my teammates. We all have our trials and errors, but if we all stick together, we can persevere through those challenges.”

Flores has started for the Lady Hubs since her freshman season, when she split time in the midfield and on defense before becoming a full-time starter at center back during her sophomore season, where she also earned Interstate 8 All-Conference First Team honors. Although injuries have plagued the Lady Hubs over the last two seasons, Flores has been a consistent contributor on defense and aims to remain that way entering her senior season.

“For my senior year, I want to have some sort of impact on the younger girls,” Flores said. “I feel like we get discouraged with the lack of female players and I want to see that change. I want to encourage the younger girls to go out and play some soccer… My three years have been a long journey. I’ve learned a lot about myself and how far I can push myself. I’ve come a long way since my freshman year and there’s nothing I would change about my experience. I’ve grown into a stronger version of myself and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Junior midfielder Makayla Lara also took home All-Conference recognition this spring, earning an Interstate 8 Honorable Mention for the second time in her career. Lara, who was named to the First Team as a sophomore, led Rochelle in goals (nine) and assists (eight). Lara totaled 22 goals and four assists as a sophomore after compiling 24 goals and six assists as a freshman.
