ROCHELLE — Bette Jean Kyler, 95, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021 at Franklin Grove Nursing Center & Rehab in Franklin Grove.

Bette was born on July 7, 1926 to Walter and Nellie (Bemis) Vierke in Rochelle. On July 7, 1948, her birthday, she married Byford Ray Kyler; they had been married for 70 years prior to his passing on Dec. 1, 2018.

Bette received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She then taught for one year at Somonauk Elementary School before devoting her time and passion into raising her two sons. She then substitute taught in the Rochelle-area schools for over 19 years. Above all, Bette loved to spend time and celebrate the holidays with her family and friends, especially Christmas. 

Bette is survived by two sons: John Kyler of Rochelle, and Dr. James (Julie) Kyler of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; five grandchildren: Erik (Melissa) Kyler, Brenda (Brian) Simons, Katherine Kyler, Bradley Hartman and Haley (Kris) Taibl; four great grandchildren: Emmaline and Kendon Kyler, and Blake and Braedy Simons.

In addition to her parents and husband, Bette is preceded in death by her brother, Jack Vierke.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30 from 10-11 a.m. at the Rochelle United Methodist Church. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. on Thursday with Pastor Glen Stewart officiating. Grave side service will follow at the Lawnridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rochelle United Methodist Church.
