A dominant second quarter enabled the Rochelle Hub varsity basketball team to hold off a strong second-half surge from Sycamore on Thursday afternoon, when the two Interstate 8 Conference foes squared off during the consolation round of the 73rd Annual E.C. Nichols Holiday Classic in Marengo.

MARENGO — A dominant second quarter enabled the Rochelle Hub varsity basketball team to hold off a strong second-half surge from Sycamore on Thursday afternoon, when the two Interstate 8 Conference foes squared off during the consolation round of the 73rd Annual E.C. Nichols Holiday Classic in Marengo. 

Senior Eli Luxton finished with 23 points along with eight rebounds and five assists as the Hubs outlasted the Spartans 74-71 on Thursday. Junior Elijah Harley recorded 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Hubs (5-9, 0-5 Interstate 8), while freshman Brody Bruns shined with a 12-point, 16-rebound double-double in the win. Junior Carson Lewis totaled 12 points on four 3-pointers with seven rebounds.

Rochelle overcame 16 turnovers in the game, which the Hubs led 35-24 at halftime after a dominant showing in the second quarter, where Rochelle held Sycamore to just five points. The Hubs cleaned the Spartans up on the glass, outrebounding Sycamore 50-33. Rochelle's aggressiveness led to a sizable advantage at the free-throw line, where the Hubs went 21-for-30 while Sycamore went 9-for-16.
