ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity tennis team was on point Wednesday evening, when the purple and white hosted Sterling Newman seeking to end a three-match losing streak.
Rochelle earned its first shutout win of the season, sweeping all three doubles matches while taking the lone singles match to beat the Comets 4-0. The Lady Hubs (4-10, 1-3 Interstate 8) received a boost from junior Merit Namaste-Rose, who rolled for a 6-2, 6-3 win against Kaitlyn Conderman. Namaste-Rose, who attends Oregon but competes with Rochelle as a part of the cooperative agreement between the two schools, has been a factor for the varsity team this fall.
Rochelle had minimal trouble in doubles, where six seniors combined for three wins to clinch the sweep. Catherine Williams and Erin Murphy took down Emmy Burger and Elise Vander Bleek 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 court, while Abby Metzger and Lauren Dyer teamed up for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ella Ford and Kaitlyn Conderman at the No. 2 court. Sydney Carmichael and Natalie Wagner fought off Bella Robichaud and Jess Ardis for a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 3 court.“
The Lady Hubs will return to action with a home match against LaSalle-Peru next Wednesday. Rochelle will then host Princeton next Thursday before holding the Interstate 8 Conference tournament at RTHS next Saturday. The IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional begins on Oct. 18.
