The Rochelle Hub varsity basketball team had a chance to snap its four-game losing streak on Tuesday evening, when the purple and white faced off against Sycamore in an Interstate 8 Conference matchup. Despite leading 36-28 at halftime, Rochelle was unable to maintain its advantage, as the Spartans scored 40 second-half points to rally for a 68-66 win over the Hubs.

SYCAMORE — The Rochelle Hub varsity basketball team had a chance to snap its four-game losing streak on Tuesday evening, when the purple and white faced off against Sycamore in an Interstate 8 Conference matchup. Despite leading 36-28 at halftime, Rochelle was unable to maintain its advantage, as the Spartans scored 40 second-half points to rally for a 68-66 win over the Hubs.

Senior Eli Luxton led the Hubs (1-5, 0-2 Interstate 8) with 20 points along with eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Junior Elijah Harley added 12 points and four rebounds, while junior Cayden Moore contributed 11 points and four assists. Rochelle controlled the offensive glass, outrebounding Sycamore 13-5 on the offensive end, but the Hubs conceded a 22-17 advantage to the Spartans on the defensive glass.

Sycamore brought Rochelle within two at the end of the third quarter, with Rochelle clinging to a 50-48 lead entering the fourth quarter, where the Spartans outscored the Hubs 20-16 to escape with the win. Despite missing nine free throws, Sycamore shot 50 percent from the field, while Rochelle shot only 37.9 percent overall. The Spartans scored 20 points off turnovers, while Rochelle totaled 14 second-chance points.

Freshman Brody Bruns finished with seven points and seven rebounds for the Hubs, who will host an Interstate 8 Conference game against Morris on Friday. Senior Jack Tracey chipped in five points in the loss.
