ROCHELLE — Senior Christian Thorne was among several members of the Rochelle Hub varsity bowling team who threw big games during Tuesday’s home match against Ottawa.

While the Pirates managed to secure one game, the Hubs took two of the three games in the Interstate 8 Conference series and built a large enough lead to win the series 3,361-3,156. It’s the eighth victory of the season for the Hubs (8-4, 4-1 Interstate 8), who have already matched their win total from last season with multiple head-to-head matches still to be played.

“I thought we did pretty well tonight,” Thorne said. “We had a rocky start from some of the other players, but I thought they recovered pretty well. We’re having one of our better seasons since I joined the team as a sophomore… We have a pretty good team this year and I’ve known some of these guys for a while now. I think our team has a chance to finish with a good place in the conference and I think we can have more than one player qualify for the sectional this year.”

Rochelle jumped out to a big lead early in the match, winning the first game 1,145-1,001 behind a series-best 234 from Thorne and a series-best 220 from senior Sam Tracey. Sophomore Andrew Powell rolled a 199 and junior Logan Frye added a 191 for the Hubs in the first game.

“I put myself in the right spot and I was able to stay consistent with it,” Thorne said.

Ottawa bit into the series lead during the second game, where the Pirates emerged with an 1,109-1,042 victory to bring Rochelle within 70 pins. The Hubs saved their best effort for last, however, clinching the series win with an 1,174-1,046 victory during the third and final game of the evening. Powell finished strong for the Hubs, firing a series-best and team-best 258 after throwing a 226 in the second game. Powell led all players with a 683 series on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Levi Waddle bowled a series-best 210 to aid the Hubs in the final game, while Frye recorded a series-best 205. Thorne bowed out with a 188 to conclude the match with a 594 series score. Rochelle will travel for the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Classic on Saturday afternoon.
