Rochelle finishes 1-2 with victory over Rockford Jefferson

BELVIDERE — The Rochelle Hub varsity soccer team competed in the Belvidere Invitational on Saturday, finishing 1-2 over three matches. Rochelle (6-7-1, 1-2 Interstate 8) defeated Rockford Jefferson before suffering back-to-back losses against Rockford East and Highland Park. The Hubs will return home for an Interstate 8 Conference match with LaSalle-Peru on Monday night.

Rockford Jefferson

Rochelle and Rockford Jefferson opened the tournament with a scoreless tie that saw the Hubs outlast the J-Hawks in a penalty-kick shootout. Junior goalkeeper Antonio Hueramo recorded five saves in regulation time for the Hubs, who totaled eight shots and six shots on goal during the match. Senior midfielder Bryan Garcia scored the deciding penalty kick for the Hubs.

Rockford East

Rochelle advanced to face Rockford East in its second match of the tournament. Despite a first-half goal from senior Alberto Casillas, Rochelle conceded a 3-1 loss to the E-Rabs, who owned a 22-5 advantage in shots and an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal during the match. 

Casillas scored his lone goal in the 15th minute, giving the Hubs a 1-0 lead before Rockford East answered with an equalizer in the 37th minute. The E-Rabs converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute and sealed their win with a third and final goal during the 50th minute of play. Junior goalkeeper Antonio Hueramo totaled nine saves for the Hubs in the loss to the E-Rabs.

Highland Park

Rochelle bowed out of the tournament with a 6-2 loss against Highland Park. Seniors Alberto Casillas and Fernando Diaz each scored goals for the Hubs, while senior Chris Castellanos notched an assist and freshman Saul Avila earned six saves. Highland Park controlled the match, finishing with a 26-6 advantage in shots and a 21-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Highland Park surged ahead after scoring goals in the 10th, 12th, 14th and 23rd minutes. The Hubs got on the board after Diaz found the back of the Highland Park net during the 25th minute. Rochelle made it a 4-2 match after Castellanos connected with Casillas for a goal in the 41st minute, but Highland Park fired back with goals during the 42nd and 50th minutes.
