ROCHELLE — The Hub varsity soccer team faced one of its toughest challenges of the season Thursday evening, when Rochelle hosted an undefeated and physically imposing Indian Creek crew for a nonconference matchup. Despite a last-minute score from senior Zane Walters, Rochelle ultimately fell short, losing 4-1 against the Timberwolves and moving to 2-4-1 overall.
While the Hubs possessed the ball for much of the first half, Indian Creek capitalized on its scoring opportunities, converting two right-footed crosses into the Rochelle box during the 16th and 30th minutes to open a 2-0 advantage. The Timberwolves used their speed on the outside and their size on defense to keep the Hub forwards and midfielders away from their net.
“I was pleased with our possession overall,” head coach Brad Male said. “I thought they were more aggressive on the ball than we were and I thought that was the difference in the game today. Their defense was very solid and we just couldn’t get around them. We had a few good shots on goal today, but they were able to shut us down. We need to work better as a team.”
Indian Creek went ahead 3-0 in the second half, sending a shot with the wind from far outside the Rochelle box that burned the back of the Hub net in the 50th minute. Looking to avoid a shutout, Rochelle found its first strike in the 74th minute, when senior Juan Cincire assisted Walters inside the Indian Creek box for a goal that the Timberwolves countered quickly. After earning a free kick, Indian Creek sent the ball into the Hub zone and scored in the 76th minute.
The Hubs will travel to face Plano on Monday, April 5 at 4:30 p.m.
