ROCHELLE — A strong first half was all the Rochelle Junior Tackle fifth-graders needed when they took on Morrison at Helms Park this past Saturday in their 2017 season-opener.
While the Junior Hubs went scoreless in the second half, Rochelle scored 16 points over the first two quarters en route to a 16-6 victory over Morrison. The win bumps the fifth-graders up to 1-0 on the season, and they will go for two in a row when they battle Rockton at home on Saturday, Aug. 19.
Ethan Goodwin broke a 0-0 tie in the first quarter with an 18-yard touchdown rush, and Grant Gensler added a 2-point conversion run to give the Junior Hubs an 8-0 lead. Rochelle’s defense forced a fumble soon after, and Brandyn Metzger recovered the loose football to put the Junior Hub offense back on the field.
Quarterback Carson Lewis kept the ball for a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, and Lewis added a 2-point conversion run of his own to increase the Rochelle lead. Morrison scored its lone touchdown in the second half, but its 2-point conversion attempt was no good.
