Flagg Township Museum Chautauqua talks set for March 25-28

ROCHELLE – The Flagg Township Museum will host a series of informal talks – Chautauqua – on March 25 through March 28 from 7-8 p.m. at the museum and it’s all about birthdays – birthday toys, the 95th birthday of a local organization, birthday cakes, and even ideas about how to save your birthday memories. Historically a Chautauqua was a cultural and social movement that started in upstate New York in the 1870s and flourished until the mid 1920s. During this time, hundreds of touring chautauquas presented lectures, dance, music, drama, and other forms of “cultural enrichment”. This year’s schedule of Chautauqua speakers is focusing on birthdays in celebration of the museum’s year-long theme, “It’s My Birthday.”

On Monday it’s all about toys – birthday toys, favorite toys, and toys made in Illinois presented by local history buff Steve O’Connor. Do you have a favorite birthday toy? Bring it along and tell us about it! We’ll celebrate the 95th birthday of local organization, Moose Lodge 903, with Dave Schabacker on Tuesday. Let’s eat cake on Wednesday after local artist Kimberly Ekes shows us how to decorate birthday cakes. Kara Schweitzer, Illinois Extension family life educator, will share the importance of family memories and how your birthday is a great time to start the process of “Penning Your Past” on Thursday.

Our series has always been a way to promote informal learning about historical and interesting topics. We hope you’ll attend this year at the museum, Monday through Thursday, March 25 to March 28 at 7 p.m. each evening.

The mission of the Flagg Township Historical Society and Museum is to stimulate interest in Flagg Township history through education, research, collection and preservation of information for the benefit of the public of today and in the future.
