ROCHELLE — Full-court pressure on defense and confident shooting on offense enabled the Rochelle Lady Hub basketball team to cruise over the Plano Reapers during an Interstate 8 Conference clash Friday evening. Guards Josie Lundquist and Sofia Lenkaitis each reached double figures in scoring as the Lady Hubs (2-2) dominated the Reapers 51-19.
The Lady Hubs suffocated Plano from the opening possession, forcing numerous Reaper turnovers in the backcourt area and taking advantage with transition baskets and second-chance scoring opportunities. Rochelle led Plano 17-4 after the first quarter, with Lundquist knocking down two 3-pointers in the period for six of her 12 points in the victory.
“We wanted to come out with a lot of intensity,” Lenkaitis said. “I thought we did that and we came in with the mentality that we wanted to win and we wanted to play together… Coach [Tony] Rowan talked to us about taking open shots and having the confidence to shoot the ball to make it, not to miss it. I think this win gives us a lot of confidence in our teamwork.”
Lenkaitis also scored 12 points Friday evening, converting two triples in the second quarter while junior guard Adriannah Davis-Carter stepped up off the bench with a layup and a 3-pointer of her own for five of her seven points in the game. Junior Lucy Bunger also hit a triple in the second quarter for the Lady Hubs, who forced 16 Plano turnovers and led 32-12 at half.
“We came together as a team,” senior forward Afi Gati said. “It wasn’t only one person shooting the ball well. Everybody was shooting the ball and making their shots. We talked before the game about being confident in our shot and shooting the ball when we’re open.”
The Lady Hub defense held Plano without a 3-pointer Friday night, while the Reapers struggled to find offense outside of guard Kayah Myles, who led Plano with 10 points. Rochelle, who led 47-19 after three quarters, limited Plano to only eight made field goals in the victory. Junior Zoey Tabor scored eight points for the Lady Hubs, who play at Morris on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
