DIXON — Poor weather conditions kept the Lady Hub tennis team off the courts this past week, but the girls were back in action Monday afternoon, when they traveled to the Emma Hubbs Tennis Facility for a nonconference match against the Dixon Duchesses.
While a week off may have contributed to some rust, Rochelle’s netters played several tough matches across the board. Dixon’s netters emerged victorious, however, winning 5-0 over the Lady Hubs (1-4, 0-1 Interstate 8 Conference). Juniors Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young nearly rallied at No. 1 doubles for Rochelle, taking Dixon players Emma Russell and Leah Kuehl to the final points of their three-set match before falling 7-5, 2-6, 8-10 in a close battle.
“We only had one practice last week so I think that played a little bit of a role in how our matches played out today,” head coach Lizzie Cartwright said. “I thought Jordin and MeLisa did their best and I thought they played a lot better when they were communicating and talking each other through their points. They’ve improved their communication a lot this season.”
Juniors Josie Lundquist and Emma Hicks also fought into a third set at No. 3 doubles, taking Dixon’s Maci Kelly and Meagan McClane to a tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 4-6, 5-10. Duchess netters Chloe Coil and Kyarra McGlown claimed the No. 2 doubles match in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Rochelle senior Sawyer McGee and junior Sylvia Hasz.
Dixon swept both singles matches, with Riley Bally taking down Lady Hub senior Anna Guevara 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Taylor Harrison defeating Rochelle junior Megan Thompson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Lady Hubs will host Sycamore on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
