ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity tennis team saw all three doubles pairs score victories on Wednesday, when the purple and white faced DeKalb in nonconference action.
Despite dropping both singles matches, Rochelle defeated the Barbs 3-2 and improved to 3-1 on the season behind the team’s three doubles wins. Seniors Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young dominated their No. 1 doubles match, beating Camryn Mason and Bella Vivirito 6-0, 6-0.
Seniors Josie Lundquist and Megan Thompson also had minimal trouble at No. 2 doubles, defeating Samantha Schwartz and Margarita Ponce 6-1, 6-2. Seniors Ella McKinney and Ashley Knight took down Sarah Aljama and Aria Foster 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to seal the sweep.
“I feel like we’ve played really well to start the season,” Thompson said. “We do a lot better when we keep our energy up. Our goal for the season will always be to do our best. I feel like our ball control has improved and we’ve learned to place the ball a lot better. I’ve been working on hitting my alley shots, serving the ball harder and keeping more of my serves inbounds.”
Seniors Emma Hicks and Madison Ost battled in singles play for the Lady Hubs, with Hicks falling 3-6, 1-6 against Aubree Judkins on the No. 1 singles court. Ost battled against Ilanie Castorena in a close match at No. 2 singles before falling 2-6, 5-7. Rochelle will travel for the Harlem Invitational on Saturday before facing off against Ottawa on the road Tuesday, Sept. 7.
“Our ball placement has been much better this year,” Lundquist said. “We have a much better idea of where our teammates are on the court and where we need to hit the ball. We’ve started the season really well and we’ve been working really hard. We’re really focused and I think we should be proud of how well we’ve started. We want to keep improving wherever we can and hopefully we’ll continue to see those improvements help us win more matches.”
