ROCHELLE — The Lady Hubs are currently playing their best tennis of the 2020 season. After recording two victories over the last three days, Rochelle added another win to its resume when the girls hosted the Belvidere Bucs for nonconference play Tuesday evening.
Behind three doubles wins, Rochelle defeated Belvidere 4-1 to improve to 6-11 overall with only one match remaining. Junior Emma Hicks won her second straight singles match for the Lady Hubs, besting Jenny Espinoza 6-3, 6-4 on the No. 2 singles court.
“We’ve been a lot more excited and aggressive during our matches,” Hicks said. “My overall performance in every area of tennis has improved, especially my aggressiveness.”
Juniors Jordin Dickey and MeLisa Young had minimal trouble at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-2, 6-1 against Citlali Vilchis and Cassandra Cortez. Senior Sawyer McGee and junior Sylvia Hasz played a strong match at No. 2 doubles, topping Teresa Madera and Jasmin Camargo 6-0, 6-2.
Senior Melanie Gonzalez stepped up with junior Megan Thompson at No. 3 doubles, working together for a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Jacky Arroyo and Chloe Konieczki. The Lady Hubs will compete in the Interstate 8 Conference Varsity Championship at Ottawa on Saturday before hitting the road for a nonconference match with Freeport next Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m. The IHSA 1A Rochelle Sectional will begin Friday, Oct. 16 at Rochelle Township High School.
“We have to keep our spirits up and have a good attitude about the game,” Hicks said. “If we take our matches one point at a time, I know we can play well in these tournaments.”
