BELVIDERE — For the second straight meet, the Rochelle girls tennis team needed to sweep all three varsity doubles matches if the Lady Hubs had any chance of winning when the girls faced Belvidere on the road Thursday evening. Once again, the Lady Hubs were up to the task.
While Thursday’s match wasn’t as dramatic as the Tuesday showdown against Rockford Lutheran, the Lady Hubs managed to win all three doubles points in two-set fashion and defeat the Bucs by a score of 3-2. Rochelle extended its win streak to two matches with the victory.
“Coach [Jeff] Truckenbrod and I are so happy with all of the work our girls have put in over the offseason and our current season,” head coach Lizzie Cartwright said. “Their hard work has paid off and it’s really exciting. It speaks to the natural, athletic ability of our players and it’s been pretty cool to watch.”
The Lady Hubs fell behind 0-2 after Rochelle senior Caitlin McMurray fell 2-6, 0-6 against Beau DeGennaro on the first varsity singles court and junior Anna Guevara lost 0-6, 2-6 against Kiana Smith at the second court. Senior Ruth Gardner and sophomore Jordin Dickey defeated Vicky Alamilla and Jillian Taylor 6-0, 6-4 on the second doubles court, while junior Sawyer McGee and sophomore MeLisa Young won 6-3, 6-2 over Arouj Mustansar and Guadalupe Rivera.
“I had a feeling Sawyer and MeLisa would work well together and I knew that had some chemistry from playing softball together,” Cartwright said. “I wanted Ruth and Jordin together because they balance each other out and they can both get fiery sometimes. They definitely want to win. MeLisa and Sawyer are both calm, collected and they want to win as well.”
Junior Melanie Gonzalez and sophomore Emma Hicks won on the third doubles court, defeating Jocelyn Aguilar and Illuzion Michel 6-2, 6-4 to help the Lady Hubs sweep doubles and earn the team victory. Rochelle will look to continue its solid play at the Harlem Invitational this weekend.
