If you could draw a square using Paw Paw, Monroe Center, DeKalb and Grand Detour as corners,  Rochelle be about the middle of that 30-or-so-mile square.

I figured that would be about 900 square miles, and takes up a lot of Northern Illinois.

The Dixie fire in California has burned over 900 square miles, destroying homes, forests, farms and everything else in its path.

Fires in Greece, southern France, the Siberian tundra in Russia…… plus the record heat and the melting of polar ice should be a concern to all of us.

Part of the cycle of nature? Possibly. But if we are causing that cycle to speed up to the point the environment can’t adapt, we are asking for huge trouble.  We need to protect the world for the future.

It starts with us.

VCCT

You probably read last week’s story on the upcoming VCCT show, “Four Old Broads.” It’s a comedy set in an elder care facility. I am in the cast, but I am not one of the old broads! This will be the first show in the old Lincoln School, now the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Lots of people worked and helped on the project, but Steve Frank and Will Mingus were the engines that drove the renovation. They did an awesome job!

By the time you read this we will have had one weekend of performances. Shows are scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. for the upcoming week.

Why not come check us out?  Perhaps you will even be motivated to join our little group and help contribute to keeping performing arts alive and growing in Rochelle.

20th Street

Every time I drive on 20th Street and hit the signal at Flagg Road, I feel I wait forever for a green. At times I have gone right and turned around at the high school.

Then I discovered a trick. Instead of stopping at the broad white line, I go about a foot over the line and a little to the right of center. Maybe it is me, but it seems the light changes a lot faster.

Fishing at Walmart

Ever see people fishing in the ponds at Walmart? I always wondered what they caught. A while ago I asked one of those fishing and they said they had caught some nice bass. Then I wondered who would have stocked the ponds?
