ROCHELLE — Loyd Powell, formerly of Cobden, Illinois, passed away Saturday, May 22, at his daughter’s home in Chana while holding the hands of his daughter and grandson. Loyd passed after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.

He was born August 4, 1939, in Balcom, Illinois, the son of Jack and Minnie (Volner) Powell. Loyd was married three times. First, to Brenda Bobo in 1962 in Rochelle. His second marriage was to Molly Parker in 1987 in Rochelle. His final marriage was to Marjorie Hartsock in 2003.

Loyd worked 35 years for Del Monte before enjoying early retirement. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, wildlife, gardening and caring for his fruit and nut trees.

He was an avid traveler to the western and southern states of the United States and would spend his winters in Florida. Loyd loved joyriding, often much to the chagrin of his fellow passengers.

He never met a stranger, loved an adventure and would try anything at least once. Loyd was famously stubborn. He referred to it at his hard headedness, which only added to his charm.

Loyd is survived by his daughter, Christina (Joe Anderson) Powell; grandson, Jack Anderson; sister, Geneva Brown of Springfield, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews and his fiercely loyal cat, Buddy.

In addition to his parents, Loyd is preceded in death by a son, Michael Powell; three wives, Brenda Hausmann, Molly Powell and Marjorie Powell; and siblings, Wayd, Walter, Arthur, Clifford, Leo, Roy, and Lucille.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Joanne Sharp and Sandy McWhorter, who helped Loyd maintain his fierce independence until the end.

A graveside funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 27 at Trinity Memory Gardens in Rochelle with Chaplain Judy Williams officiating. Donations in Loyd’s memory may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Please visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
