STEWARD — Margaret Elizabeth (Walker) Smith, 91, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020 at her home with her family at her side.

Margaret was born on July 16, 1929 to Allen and Opal (Beaman) Walker on a farm near Malta, Illinois. On Oct. 5, 1947 she married Gardner J. Smith, who preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2001.  She is also predeceased by her daughter, Elaine Schmidt on July 7, 1997; two sons, Donald E. Smith on Dec. 12, 2011 and David A. Smith on Sept. 29, 2015; brother, Darrell (Jeanne) Walker; sister, Winifred (Maurice) Olson; and a nephew.

Margaret was a member of the Steward United Methodist Church, a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She loved the Rochelle Senior Center, especially the Friendship Quilters. Every grandchild and great-grandchild received a handmade quilt. She also had a handmade crocheted doll collection. Margaret enjoyed the many travel bus tours she experienced and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their various sporting events.

Margaret is survived by her two children, Sharen (Jack) Thompson of Steward and Richard (Kathy Taylor) Smith of Hickory Corners, Michigan; eight grandchildren, Sheila (Jeff) Pinter of Malden, Joel (Peg) Thompson of Rochelle, Jared (Jan) Thompson of Rochelle, Chris (Amy) Smith of Jerome, Idaho, Phillip (Amber) Schmidt of Hickory, N.C., Josh (Sarah) Smith of Shabbona, Justin (Andrea) Smith of Steward, and Brooke (Chris) Cox of Rochelle; 16 great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Hannah, Kyle and Corey Pinter, Cody, Hailey and Megan Thompson, Dempsey Smith, Rayna and Colson Schmidt, Tucker, Polly Jo and Trigg Smith, McKenzie and McKayla Smith, Colby Cox and three step great-grandchildren, Nicole (Warren) Green, Kevin (Ali) Kane and Hannah (Mark Johnson) Kane; two step great-great-granddaughters, Kendall and Maggie Green; five nieces; and two nephews.

There will be a private family funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. The service will be live streamed on the Unger-Horner Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow the service at Steward Cemetery in Steward. Memorials may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Steward United Methodist Church or to Serenity Hospice and Home.
