Veneta Mae Campbell


STEVENS POINT, Wisc. — Veneta Mae Campbell, 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 6 at Willow Brooke Point Senior Living in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She was born Feb. 21, 1929 in Belle Rive, Illinois, to William and Alta (Shrum) Purvis.

She married John (Jack) Campbell on Dec. 6, 1952, in Rochelle. Veneta was a graduate of Rochelle High School and met Jack while working as a secretary at Calpak (Del Monte Foods) in Rochelle. Veneta and Jack lived in Lincoln, Nebraska while Jack completed his college degree. Jack’s work with Del Monte took them back to Rochelle, then to Markesan, Wisconsin and, in 1968, to Stevens Point. 

Veneta worked as a secretary and a teacher’s aide but her true passion was music. Born into a musical family, she played the violin and sang most of her life with various musical groups and choirs. She sang with the Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church for 30 years. Veneta’s hobbies included golfing, gardening, knitting, playing bridge, reading, and travel. She was a member of Chapter 1, PEO Sisterhood, Presbyterian Women, and Christian Women’s Club.

In addition to her parents, Veneta was preceded in death by her son, James Carlton; brother, William Purvis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deloris (Bob) Schaneberg, Doris (Allen) Gittleson; Juanita (Homer) Williams; and Betty (Robert) Walsh; nephews Bob Gittleson; and Gary Williams.

Veneta is survived by her husband, Jack; her children, Carol L. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jane M. of Gillette, Wyoming, and John W. of Pulaski, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Greg Deal of Gillette, Wyoming, Tierney Deal of Santa Rosa, California, Josie Campbell of Pulaski, Wisconsin, and Jaxon Campbell of Pulaski, Wisconsin; and her great-grandson Hayden Deal of Bay City, Michigan.

Visitation for Veneta will be Friday, Sept. 17 from 10-11 a.m. at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point. Memorial Service will follow the visitation, beginning at 11 a.m.

Interment will be at Markesan Memorial Cemetery in Markesan, Wisconsin.
