ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Lady Hub varsity volleyball team continued rounding into form for the IHSA 3A Burlington Central Regional next week, defeating Morris in two sets on Tuesday for a third consecutive Interstate 8 victory. Behind 13 assists from senior Sylvia Hasz, Rochelle downed the Redskins 25-18, 25-20 and improved to 15-15 overall in the team’s home finale.

“I thought our girls played tonight exactly how I want them to play during the regional next week,” head coach Molly Sly said. “Payton [Hale] was putting up huge blocks for us and Kennedy [Adamski] put the ball away really well in the middle. We were giving them a lot of different looks and we were able to confuse their blockers and open up more shots outside.”

Rochelle opened the match with a 9-1 run, taking advantage of poor serve receivers from the Redskins. The Lady Hubs conceded seven unanswered points soon after, but with Hale leading the block from the middle hitter position, Rochelle recovered and extended its lead to 17-11 and forced a Morris timeout. Hale led the Lady Hubs with three blocks in the victory.

Junior Addie Friestad sealed Rochelle’s first-set win with one of her five kills in the match. Back-row errors hurt the Lady Hubs in the second set, allowing the Redskins to slip ahead 13-11 after a brief 6-0 run. Rochelle bounced back once again, with Hasz feeding Friestad on the outside and sophomore Kennedy Adamski, who had a team-leading six kills, in the middle.

“When Sylvia was our top hitter, she would always finish with the most kills,” Sly said. “But now that she’s setting, our kills are spread out across the board, which helps us because we’re able to make it tougher for teams to read and block our shots. Addie has really stepped up on the outside and we’ve seen that lightbulb turn on and her competitiveness increase, which has been exciting to see. Sylvia’s blocks on the right side have made a big difference as well.”

Senior Zoey Tabor and junior Macy Ramos combined for five aces in the match. Rochelle will begin the IHSA 3A Burlington Central Regional on Tuesday as the No. 5 seed. The Lady Hubs will face No. 3 seed and host school Burlington Central in the semifinal round.
