Nadig, Metzger earn first-place medals

ROCKFORD — The Rochelle Hub varsity wrestling team finished fifth out of 18 schools at the Rockford East Giardini Invitational on Saturday. Rochelle scored 125.5 points in the meet.

Senior Caleb Nadig took first place in the 145-pound bracket. Nadig scored consecutive technical falls against Rolling Meadows’ Ben Olberg (18-3), Metea Valley’s Patrick Mullen (17-1) and Freeport’s Jaylon Hail (17-1) before pinning Rockford East’s Sam Young to win the title.

Sophomore Brock Metzger finished first in the 170-pound bracket. Metzger opened the tournament with a 9-3 decision against Geneseo’s Nathan McAvoy and a 10-4 decision over Belmont’s Kadyn Davis. Metzger won by fall over Winnebago’s Lucas Cowman in the semifinal round before pinning Richmond-Burton’s Alex Reyna in the third period during the finals.

Freshman Xavier Villalobos took second in the 113-pound bracket. Villalobos notched back-to-back pins against Belmont’s Austin Cushman and Rockford East’s Peter Young before facing Geneseo’s Zachary Montez, who outlasted Villalobos for a 6-4 sudden victory in the finals.

Freshman Joseph Nadig finished second in the 120-pound bracket. Nadig scored a 16-3 major decision against Richmond-Burton’s Dalton Youngs before grinding out a 2-1 decision against Rolling Meadows’ Alan Velasquez. Freeport’s Cadence Diduch won the title with a 7-1 decision.

Sophomore Tommy Tourdot took third in the 106-pound bracket. Tourdot won by fall over Geneseo’s Devan Hornback before being pinned by Kaneland’s Cameron Phillips. Tourdot advanced to the third-place bout against Richmond-Burton’s Clay Madula, winning by fall.

Freshman Kaiden Morris placed third in the 220-pound bracket. Morris received a first-round bye before pinning North Boone’s Greyson Griffin in the quarterfinals. After being pinned by Geneseo’s Tim Stohl, Morris topped East Aurora’s Bryan Romero by 9-3 decision for third place.

Junior Wesley Brown scored one victory in the 132-pound bracket, winning by fall over North Boone’s Dominic Mercadante. Freshman Grant Gensler wrestled in the 145-pound bracket, pinning Kaneland’s Cole Olsen. Junior Weldon Nay finished 0-2 in the 126-pound bracket.
