LASALLE — If the Rochelle wrestling team wasn’t on the radar when the season started, the Hubs may very well be there now after upsetting another state-ranked opponent to kick off conference competition Thursday evening.
After upending Rock Falls (No. 10 in 1A) in their three-team meet with Erie-Prophetstown on Wednesday, the Hubs went on the road and took down the Cavaliers (No. 13 in 2A) 41-33 and improved to 4-1 on the season. Rochelle won five straight matches over the second half of the dual meet to claim the victory.
Sophomore Caleb Nadig scored a fall over Austin Christmann at 126 pounds to record Rochelle’s first non-forfeit win of the match. The Hubs elevated junior Grant Thompson and senior Keegan Davis-Carter to 138 and 152, respectively, and both wrestlers delivered with critical victories. Thompson notched a 19-4 technical fall and Davis-Carter edged out Hunter Karun by 5-3 decision to cut the LaSalle-Peru lead to 21-20.
Senior Zeke Horn pushed Rochelle forward with a momentous victory against Parker Swiskoski at 160. Horn fell by 10-3 decision against Swiskoski last season, but Horn was strong on defense Thursday evening, holding Swiskoski off and winning by 4-0 decision. Senior Bryan Garza followed with a pin over Nick Krolak at 170, and after junior Noah Messer took a forfeit at 182, junior Ben Harvey improved to 4-0 on the year with a fall over Connor Lorden at 195.
