Lady Hub wrestlers record top-4 finishes in Thursday tournament

OTTAWA — The Rochelle Lady Hub wrestlers competed in the annual Ottawa Girls Invitational on Thursday. Sophomore Cammyla Macias and junior Dempsey Atkinson each medaled with top-4 finishes in the tournament. Macias placed third in her bracket with a 3-1 record over four bouts, while Atkinson finished fourth in her bracket with a 2-2 record over four bouts.

Macias began the tournament with a first-round victory against Ottawa’s Emma Yawn, compiling two takedowns and five near falls before earning a second-period fall. Macias continued her hot streak with a second-round win by fall over Oak Park-River Forest wrestler Ana Banuelos.

Macias fell against Lemont’s Molly O’Connor in the semifinal round, taking a scoreless first period into the second period, where O’Connor eventually won by fall. Macias finished the tournament on a high note, concluding her day with a win in the third-place bout, where she overcame a reversal and a near fall to defeat Naperville Central’s Ellen Purl by fall.

Atkinson recorded back-to-back victories to begin her tournament. Atkinson totaled three takedowns and three near falls before scoring a third-period fall over Freeport’s NaJeyah Wallace in the first round. Atkinson followed with three more takedowns and four more near falls during her second-round 17-2 technical fall over Rock Falls wrestler Elisa Russell.

Atkinson fell in the semifinal round, conceding a first-period fall against Moline’s Maryam Ndiaye. Atkinson battled Plainfield South’s Teagan Aurich in the third-place bout, taking a 1-0 deficit into the third period, where Atkinson eventually fell in a 6-1 decision for Aurich.
