Area children treated to a shopping trip

ROCHELLE — Santa and his elves were busy Thursday evening helping to brighten the Christmas season for over 200 area children and their families during the annual Rochelle Community Action Network Shopping Trip.
“We had another great event,” said CAN board president Michelle Pease. “There is such a strong sense of community, everyone comes together.”
Volunteers, including students from Rochelle Township High School, came together for the event over 20 years strong. Adult volunteers helped the children to choose winter weather gear, pajamas, an outfit and a toy from Walmart. Fundraising done by CAN throughout the year helped provide a $75 gift card for each youngster.
The children also received new coats; toys were donated by the Hub City Cruisers.
Lee-Ogle Transportation Service once again provided door-to-door shuttle service for the children and their adult volunteer shoppers.

“Please know that LOTS is ready to sign up and help next year,” said Greg Gates, Director of Lee-Ogle Transportation System. “We love this event and are on board with helping as needed.”
Along with LOTS assisting the transportation, several businesses that donated items to accompany the spaghetti dinner provided for 300 people:  MightyVine, Aldi, and Walmart provided salad items; and Alfano’s provided breadsticks.
Members of League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, assisted with the cooking and serving.
“The event happens with the help from everyone, and all of us at CAN are grateful for the volunteers and donations that help make this a success. Thanks to LOTS for the assistance with transportation,” Pease said enthusiastically.
About CAN
The Rochelle Community Action Network (CAN) provides resources to assist children and families in becoming successful members of the community. The organization is a collaborative effort with the school district and distributes school backpacks filled with supplies as well as winter coats to children in need.  The organization also has “CAN elves,” a group of local retired teachers, who assist with efforts.
