“Bleacher Bums” set to take the stage

ROCHELLE — The Chicago Cubs may have won the pennant, but the bums in the bleachers just don’t know it yet.
VCCT is presenting the comedy “Bleacher Bums” July 21, 22, 23, 27, 28.  Show times are 8 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday shows and 2 p.m. for the Sunday, July 23, matinee
“Bleacher Bums” is set in the bleachers at Wrigley Field.  An odd assortment of Cub fans are on hand to watch the home team in their futile quest to be a winner.
Tickets for the show are $12 at the door or $11 online at vcctrochelle.org. You can also purchase a table of eight for $80, but online only.
All shows are in the Paddock Room at Hickory Grove, 1127 N. Seventh St. in Rochelle, part of the Hickory Grove complex.
Karen Olsen-Schwanert is Rose, the nagging wife who goes to the game to track down her gambling husband.

“I went to the Bleacher Bums audition so my daughter Alyssa could try out. I helped read some lines and was asked to be in the play,” Olsen-Schwanert said of her part in the show.
The 12 year Army veteran can identify with her on stage personality.  “I am firm and strong just like Rose. I like how she calls Zig out for gambling up their money at a Cubs game and I would probably react the same way. “
This will be Olsen-Schwanert’s first time on stage.
Alyssa Schwanert plays The Kid, who just wants to watch a Cubs game alone.
“I can relate because I’m always trying to go places without my parents and I like the Cubs,” she noted of her character.
Alyssa has been in the VCCT shows “Wizard of Oz” and “Joseph and the  Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” She was also Little Miss Peanut in 2013 and has performed in Lincoln Highway Heritage Festival’s Rochelle’s Got Talent three times.
She likes being in shows and hopes someday to be an actress.
Michael Hynek is Greg, a man who is blind, but enjoys listening to the games and going to the ballpark.
“Greg is very kind and thoughtful,” Hynek noted, which means the character is much like the actor in real life.
Hynek has been in “A Few Good Men,”  “The Legend of Robin Hood…Sort Of,” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” all with VCCT.
Also in the show are Nikki Dobbs, Ken Manning, Todd Burghardt, Nathan Holda, Alexander Cremeans, Vicky Martinez and Dean Wren.
Director Kim Ekes notes the show does contain some strong language, so it’s recommended for mature audiences.
