ROCHELLE — Seeing the jumpers falling from the sky was a sight to see for a group of Rotarians from India.
The seven Rotary members made the nearly 15-hour plane ride from their home half way around the world to visit the U.S., arriving at the end of May. Some of the places the group toured include downtown Chicago, the Wahl Clipper factory in Sterling, and Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford.
The group also toured Rochelle’s Bright Farms greenhouse.
The visit is through the Rotary’s Friendship Exchange program, which allows Rotarians around the world to see what life is like in other countries. Rotary members volunteer to be hosts for the visitors, showing guests their part of the world.
The Rotarians from India spoke at a Rochelle Rotary Club meeting Tuesday, wrapping up their visit to Rochelle Wednesday afternoon with a trip to the airport to see the skydivers.
“We like the hospitality of all of our hosts,” said Satpal Singh Chawla.
Chawla, along with the others are headed Thursday to Fermilab in Batavia and visiting Barrington before flying back to India on Friday.
Bobbi Burke, Assistant Governor and Friendship Exchange Chair were with the group at the airport Wednesday, enjoying the bright sunshine on the patio.
Burke said the Rochelle’s Rotary is now in their 75th year. Although no plans are made, there have been discussions on Rochelle Rotary members possibly participating in the Friendship Exchange.
“It’s a great program,” Burke said. “We will be hosting two ladies from Peru in the near future.”
