Early morning fire in Rochelle


ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Fire Department, along with Ogle-Lee Fire Protection District responded to an apartment fire on Short Court early Monday morning.
Crews were called at 2:45 a.m. to 1258 Short Court for smoke in the building, which contains six units. There were no injuries reported.
First responding officers reported heavy smoke and people evacuating. Flames could be seen through the lower level windows.
Rochelle Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville said the blaze was contained to one apartment.
“The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment downstairs,” Sawlsville said. “At this time we do not know the cause.
Sawlsville said he has been in contact with the building owner, but not the occupant of the apartment.
Damages to the building, which left three families displaced, are estimated at $40,000.
The Rochelle Fire Department, along with Steward and Flagg Center Departments remained on scene for about two and a half hours. Creston Fire Department covered the Rochelle station.
An investigation as to the cause of the fire continues.
