The Hubs varsity tennis team hadn’t been shut out prior to Tuesday’s conference battle with Sterling, but the purple and white were unable to bring home any match victories, and the Golden Warriors cruised to a 5-0 win over Rochelle to drop the Hubs to 2-3 overall.

Golden Warriors defeat Rochelle boys 5-0

ROCHELLE — The Hubs varsity tennis team hadn’t been shut out prior to Tuesday’s conference battle with Sterling, but the purple and white were unable to bring home any match victories, and the Golden Warriors cruised to a 5-0 win over Rochelle to drop the Hubs to 2-3 overall.

Rochelle senior Noah Griffith took on Sterling’s Dillon Nitz at No. 1 singles, with both players splitting the first two sets before Nitz claimed the third set to defeat Griffith 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. Hub senior Kevin Zheng faced Sterling’s Grant Bright at No. 2 singles, with Bright taking down Zheng in two sets by a score of 6-4, 6-1.

Sterling’s Henry Steinhagen and Andrew Ivarson defeated Rochelle juniors Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-1), while Sterling’s Dawson Koett and Carter Gearing topped Rochelle senior Jesus Nava and junior Emilio Nava at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Sterling’s Mitchell Petroski and Luke Steinke won at No. 3 doubles over Rochelle sophomores Sean Flanagan and Alexis Quintanilla 6-0, 6-0.

Rochelle’s next match will be played at LaSalle-Peru on Thursday, April 19 at 4:30 p.m.
