ROCHELLE — Two male juveniles, ages 14 and 15, appeared in Ogle County court Thursday afternoon for detention hearings following the discovery of a C02 powered BB gun in a Rochelle Township High School locker Wednesday morning.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said both boys were charged with six counts of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for possessing the air pistol.

“After further investigation and research, it was found that the air pistol does not meet the legal definition of a firearm or dangerous weapon, so no charges of that nature were filed,” Morrow said. “There are no allegations that the air pistol was brandished at the school or that anyone was threatened with it.”

Morrow said the 14-year-old was released to the custody of FOCUS House with a return court date for April 17 at 1 p.m. for a pretrial conference.

The 15-year-old was released to his parents and must report to the FOCUS House during the weekday times Monday-Friday, which is a condition of a pretrial order. He is also required to cooperate with the program and comply with any counseling or assessments as directed, and has a pretrial conference scheduled for March 27 at 1 p.m.

The discovery of the BB gun led to a soft lock down at the school for approximately an hour on Feb. 20, while the Rochelle Police Department and Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies investigated.

RTHS officials said several alert students informed school staff about a possible gun in the building, and administrators quickly confined the juveniles in question and the BB gun was located in a locker.
