Local law enforcement headed to the rooftop

ROCHELLE — Local law enforcement personnel will be perched in a most unusual spot later this month to support the Special Olympics.

Several Rochelle Police officers will be joined by Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies to participate in the “Cop on a Rooftop” at the Rochelle Dunkin’ Donuts on Friday, May 18 from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Everyone is encouraged to come and see the officers as well as donate to the Special Olympics. Every donation will receive a coupon for a donut, and every $10 donation will receive a Torch Run travel mug (while supplies last) and a coupon for a free medium coffee.

In addition, the Rochelle Police Department will be selling t-shirts, hats, and lapel pins. Both the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and the Rochelle Police Department will be selling raffle tickets for a 2018 Harley Davidson Street Glide (valued at $20,000) and a 2017 Can-Am Defender HDS (valued at $9,999). Raffle tickets are $10 each.

The drawing will be held on Oct. 19 and all proceeds go to Special Olympics Illinois.

“We want to thank Dunkin’ Donuts for their participation in raising funds for the Special Olympics. We also thank them for allowing us to connect with the citizens in a different arena,” said Rochelle Police Chief Higby. “This gives us the opportunity to show that we contribute to the community in ways beyond the usual response to calls.”

Each year in June members of the Rochelle Police Department as well as the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office participate in the Torch Run. Sheriff Brian VanVickle said the department is looking forward to participating in the rooftop event.

“We do the Torch Run every year, and we will again this year. Now that we have a Dunkin’ Donuts in the county to participate at, we are looking forward to it,” VanVickle said. “I’ve been on a lot of roofs, but not to raise money.”

For the 16th year, police officers throughout the state sit atop the Dunkin’ Donuts to raise awareness and donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

T-shirts and hats are $15 each and lapel pins are $5. For general donations, checks should be made payable to Special Olympics Illinois. Chief Higby welcomes all Ogle County Law enforcement to join in the event.

About Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. The annual intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have two goals — to raise money and gain public awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois. The event has raised more than $47 million over 32 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments.
