ROCHELLE — Jim Moorehead of Rochelle will be celebrating his 98th birthday on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
The local resident served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Bluefish submarine as a diesel mechanic. Moorehead enjoys sharing stories of the submarine patrols, which lasted approximately 45 days. Approximately 45 years ago, Moorehead acquired a piece of the submarine’s wooden decking before it was to be scrapped. A few years ago he had the piece cut into two blocks and engraved with its significance, which is permanently attached to the top.
The soon-to-be 98 year-old and his wife, Marnie, 95, with be celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary on Jan. 24, 2019.
