OGLE COUNTY — Emergency personnel were on the scene for more than three hours Monday northeast of Creston following the discovery of two old mortar shells. A farmer in the field discovered them.
The shells were found in a dried up creek bed along East Line Rd., located just north of Twombly Rd.
The Winnebago County Bomb Squad was called to the scene to determine whether the shells were active. Both shells were blown up in a grass area by the bomb squad. The shells, according to officials, were too old to be dangerous; however, they were deactivated to prevent any injuries to anyone who may come in contact with them.
The Rochelle Fire Department was also called to the scene prior to the arrival of the bomb squad to be on hand in the event the shells exploded. They remained on scene until the shells were safely deactivated.
