DEKALB – The Northern Illinois University Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) invites community members of all ages to learn in an informal, non-competitive setting. The member-directed group of learners is now meeting online, and registration to attend any and all of the fall courses is just $47.50 per person.
The eight-week term runs from Sept. 14 through Nov. 4 and offers six weekly classes on topics ranging from women artists to Japanese history to volcanoes.

The featured learning topics for the fall term include “Musical Duos,” an exploration of classic musical duets from pop to opera; “In the Beginning: 1853 to 1941,” an exploration of Japanese foreign relations leading up to WWII; “She Painted That?”, an investigation of women artists through the centuries who have produced magnificent art; and “Magma Cum Loudly,” a virtual voyage around the world to visit some of the most amazing volcanoes.
The group is also looking forward to “Looking Back – Moving Forward,” a series of talks by a variety of DeKalb County leaders about how the county has responded to the COVID-19 crisis in order to keep growing and expanding.
And, as they do each term, the LLI organizers will also welcome experts, primarily NIU faculty members, to give lectures about their areas of expertise, with topics ranging from swarming robots to the history of the Irish in Illinois.
The LLI is ready to welcome new members to the group and wants potential members to know that everyone is welcome, regardless of level of education or background. The only requirements are curiosity and a willingness to continue learning at any age.
