Opinion: Dogs shouldn't be used in lab tests

Posted

Dear Editor,
The current Veterans Administration (VA) is endorsing research on dogs. While it is illegal to use dogs to test for new make-up concoctions, the VA is doing these studies:
In Milwaukee, sections of dogs’ brains are removed to test neurons that control breathing.

In Cleveland, tests use electrodes on dogs’ spinal cords to measure cough reflexes then the spinal cords are cut.
In Richmond, Va., they put pacemakers in dogs and induce abnormal heart rhythms then run the dogs on treadmills.
In all of these studies, the dogs are then euthanized by injection or by drawing their blood until they die.
Dogs deserve better than this.
