ROCHELLE – Residents of Rochelle should be extra cautious when answering their phone.
The City of Rochelle received a report on Wednesday from a resident after receiving a phone call asking them to provide personal information to participate in a Medicare survey. The caller ID on the phone call showed it was from the City of Rochelle, but city officials are warning they are not making such calls.
“The City of Rochelle is not doing a Medicare survey,” said Jenny Thompson, director of marketing, public relations and tourism for Rochelle.
This is the only report of a call of this nature, but there have been phone call scams such as this in the past. These scams usually occur during tax season and seem to target senior citizens in the community.
City officials want to remind the community not to give out personal information over the phone to anyone.
“We just remind residents that any legitimate organization will not ask for your personal information over the phone,” Thompson added.
Residents who receive any of these phone calls are urged to contact the Rochelle Police Department right away. Avoiding scammers such as these all comes down to being careful when talking to anyone over the phone.
“Be careful with who you are giving personal information to and we especially encourage people to know who they are dealing with,” said Thompson.
