Summer reading programs provide something for every age

ROCHELLE — Calling all readers! The Flagg-Rochelle Public Library started their summer reading programming this week with some exciting events planned for readers of all ages.

Registration for the summer programs began this week and will be available until Sat., July 1.

From Books and Babies and Preschool Story Time sessions to Readapalooza and the morning and evening adult readers book clubs, the community will have plenty of ways to make reading a part of their summer routine.

Assistant director Connie Avery said the library staff is asking everyone to help the goal to read 450,000 pages during the months of June, July, and August.

“Last year we read 447,532 pages…we can do this! Pick up a count slip, read, record, return…and repeat,” Avery said enthusiastically.

Young readers through fourth grade can participate in the reading program on Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Avery said there are games and fun activities scheduled including chess and checkers, crafts, and sidewalk chalk art.

For students who have completed fifth through eighth grade there is the “Readapalooza Book Club,” featuring six popular books that the group will read and discuss on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Titles such as “The Familiars,” “The Secret Garden,” “Ella Enchanted,” “Storm Horse,” and “Inkheart,” are scheduled for this club.

Adults are welcome to join the morning and evening book clubs. These are held on Monday mornings at 11 a.m. on June 12, July 10, or Aug. 14, and on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. on June 20, July 18, and Aug. 15. No registration is needed for these and adults are welcome to join the discussion anytime. Copies of the books are available at the upstairs circulation desk.

The youngest readers

The Books and Babies program is for babies and young toddlers up until three years of age and their parent or caregiver. These sessions will be held Friday mornings from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. No programming for the July 7 session.

For children ages three to five who have not attended Kindergarten, there will be sessions each Thursday morning from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the exception of the morning of July 6.
