Therapeutic journaling — writing to heal

ROCHELLE — Dear Diary, it has been a really busy day today…

Although keeping a diary might conjure up images of a young girl writing about daily toils and troubles and locking it up with a key, writing in a diary or keeping a journal, by most accounts, is therapeutic.

A new class with the Flagg-Rochelle Park District will give pointers to employ journaling as a way to reduce stress, effectively solve problems, and even clarify thoughts and feelings.

Starting Nov. 1, the class will meet every Wednesday for six weeks from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library. There will be no class on Nov. 22.

The fee is $40.

“Just like I had to learn how to breathe by going to my Tai Chi class you can learn a way to self-heal by journaling,” said class instructor Leah “Clue” Vanstone. “This class is not group therapy but individual insight work and through your writing you’ll discover that your journal is an all-accepting, nonjudgmental friend.”

Participants will need to bring a blank journal, a pen, and an open mind to the weekly writing assignments.

Leah L. Vanstone M.S. has a private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1995.
