ROCHELLE — A three-run effort in the bottom of the first inning wasn’t enough for the Rochelle Hub varsity baseball team during Thursday evening’s Interstate 8 series finale against Morris.

Junior Carson Lewis and sophomore Brode Metzger each recorded RBIs for the Hubs, who allowed five runs in both the second and fifth innings of their 14-3 loss to the Redskins. Rochelle (4-13, 0-9 Interstate 8) committed four errors and was held to three hits. The Hubs will host Forreston on Friday before traveling for an Interstate 8 game at LaSalle-Peru on Monday.

Morris tallied two runs in the top of the first inning, where AJ Zweeres smacked a lead-off double and scored on a wild pitch before Griffin Zweeres sent an RBI double into center that scored Brett Bounds. Rochelle answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring after a wild pitch as well as a sacrifice fly from Metzger and an RBI single to left field from Lewis.

Three different Redskins including AJ Zweeres, Bounds and Cody DelFavero notched RBI singles in the top of the second inning, where Morris scored five runs to take a 7-3 lead over the Hubs. The Redskins added one run over both the third and fourth innings, surging ahead 9-3 after AJ Zweeres scored on a passed ball in the third and Nazim Baftiri scored on an error in the fourth. Baftiri’s two-run single highlighted a five-run Morris rally in the top of the fifth inning.
