SYCAMORE — One second-half goal was the deciding factor during the Rochelle Hub varsity soccer team’s Interstate 8 Conference road match against Sycamore on Monday evening.
Although the Spartans held a sizable advantage in both shots (24-8) and shots on goal (17-4), Rochelle stood strong defensively, holding Sycamore scoreless in the first half. But the Spartans finally broke through during the 49th minute, putting in the first and only goal of the match to outlast the Hubs 1-0. Rochelle (8-9-1, 3-3 Interstate 8) will host Kaneland on Wednesday.
Junior goalkeeper Antonio Hueramo finished with eight saves for the Hubs, who saw senior Bryan Garcia put a shot on goal during the first minute that was saved by the Spartans. Rochelle had another scoring chance during the 24th minute, when seniors Fernando Diaz and Alberto Casillas each had shots on goal that were turned away by the Sycamore defense. Junior Antonio Ruiz landed Rochelle’s final shot on goal during the 61st minute of play.
