ROCHELLE — Rochelle Township High School hosted the Hub Varsity Invitational on Saturday. The Rochelle Hub varsity tennis team tied for second out of four schools in the tournament with 16 points. Princeton won with 24 points and Newman Central Catholic tied for second with 16.
Seniors Austin Raleigh and Eli Luxton took second in the No. 3 doubles division with a 3-1 record. The seniors opened the tournament with an 8-4 win over Newman Central Catholic’s Max Williar and Brooks Knudson before scoring an 8-1 win against Mendota’s Alex Holland and Ryder Woods. Luxton and Raleigh then defeated Rochelle’s Amor Lara and Derek Swartz 8-2 before closing the tournament with a 3-8 loss against Princeton’s Josh Orwig and Landon Davis.
Senior Jimmy Chavez finished third in the No. 1 singles division with a 2-2 record. Chavez took down Mendota’s Daegan Setchell 8-4 and Dixon’s Bashar Elbzour 8-4 before conceding a 5-8 loss to Newman Central Catholic’s Ryan Partington and a 3-8 loss to Princeton’s Tyson Phillips.
Sophomore Philip Winters finished third in the No. 2 singles division with a 2-2 record, closing the tournament with back-to-back 9-7 wins against Dixon’s Jack McGrail and Newman Central Catholic’s Nathaniel Burger. Winters opened the tournament with a 3-8 loss against Princeton’s Chase Sims before conceding a 1-8 loss against Mendota’s Cameron Escatel.
Senior Parker Lenkaitis and sophomore Mark Green finished third in the No. 1 doubles division with a 2-2 record, edging Dixon’s Javian Herwig and Derek Miller for a 9-8(3) win and finishing strong with an 8-0 sweep over Mendota’s BJ Bresley and Josh Sondgeroth. Lenkaitis and Green conceded two losses including a 4-8 defeat against Newman Central Catholic’s Logan Palmer and Josh Rhodes as well as a 1-8 loss to Princeton’s Ben Anderson and Michael Ellis.
Senior Alex McBride and sophomore Caleb Mortensen finished third in the No. 2 doubles division with a 2-2 record, notching back-to-back 8-3 wins against Mendota’s Landon Lee and Harlan Gallagher as well as Dixon’s Will Lindenmeyer and Alex Basiloi. McBride and Mortensen fell 0-8 against Newman Central Catholic’s JP Ryan and Hiram Ziegler and 0-8 against Princeton’s Jackson Mason and Asa Gartin.
