Many in the community enjoyed an enchilada dinner while helping to support LULAC Rochelle Wednesday.

The line of cars stretched onto Sixth Avenue just outside the Rochelle Firefighters’ Social Hall. Xitlaly Suarez-Garcia and Sandra Montoya took customers’ orders while members of LULAC were inside preparing the enchiladas, rice, and beans.

“Money raised from this event will go towards community workshops and programs,” said Marisol Martinez, LULAC.

The Rochelle chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) formed in 2015. The group’s focus is on empowering the Hispanic community through accessibility to resources.

The Rochelle chapter believes that by working with the existing organizations in the city, members of the Spanish-speaking community can become more aware of the resources that are already available.

Through a series of educational events and workshops, the group’s mission is to welcome and inform the Hispanic community with knowledge and materials aimed to enhance the quality of life.

Martinez said the group with be beginning a mentoring program with the school district sometime this fall.
